Ring-ditch, Duninga, Co. Kilkenny

Beneath a working tillage field in Duninga, County Kilkenny, lies a circular ditch that nobody has yet walked around, touched, or excavated.

It exists, for now, only as a ghost in the soil, a faint circular mark roughly ten metres across that becomes visible from the air when growing crops betray the buried features beneath them. These cropmarks form because soil disturbed by ancient digging retains moisture differently from the surrounding ground, causing the plants above to grow taller or a different shade, depending on the season and the crop. The effect can be subtle, and it was only in satellite imagery captured on 14 July 2018, through Google Earth Pro, that this particular feature was spotted and identified by Jean-Charles Caillère.

The site is classified as a ring-ditch, a term generally used for a small circular or near-circular ditched enclosure that is thought in many cases to be the remains of a prehistoric burial monument, perhaps the ditch that once surrounded a low mound or cairn now entirely levelled by centuries of ploughing. At around ten metres in diameter, this example is modest in scale, consistent with the kind of funerary or ritual enclosure found across Ireland from the Bronze Age onward. The fact that it sits within what the record describes as a gallops, a long oval or linear track used for exercising racehorses, adds an unintended historical layering: one landscape feature associated with leisure and breeding placed directly over another associated, quite possibly, with the dead.

Because the site survives only as a cropmark, there is nothing visible at ground level for a visitor to observe. The field is under tillage, and the ring-ditch itself is detectable only under specific conditions of growth and light, and only from altitude. Its existence is, in that sense, a fact held largely by the satellite image that revealed it.
