Ring-ditch, Lughinny, Co. Kilkenny

In a cultivated field near Lughinny in County Kilkenny, the ground holds a secret that only becomes visible from the air.

A ring-ditch roughly ten metres in diameter lies beneath the surface, invisible to anyone walking across the soil but traceable through the cropmarks it leaves behind, where differences in soil depth and moisture cause the crops above a buried ditch to grow at a slightly different rate than those around them. It is the kind of archaeology that only aircraft and dry summers can reveal.

The feature was identified through an aerial photograph, reference GB90.CJ.30, which captured the cropmark during what was evidently favourable conditions for this kind of survey. Ring-ditches are typically the ploughed-out or eroded remains of prehistoric burial monuments, most often round barrows, where a circular trench once surrounded a central mound. Over centuries of cultivation the upstanding earthwork is gradually levelled, but the ditch, having been cut deeper into the subsoil, persists as a difference in the ground that plants overhead continue to register. The ten-metre diameter places this example within a size range consistent with Bronze Age funerary monuments, though without excavation it is impossible to confirm the date, purpose, or whether any burial deposit survives at the centre.
