This is one of the more quietly strange categories of archaeological site: a ring-ditch that leaves no trace whatsoever at ground level, recorded not by excavation or fieldwork but by the shadow geometry of aerial photography.

Ring-ditches are the buried remnants of circular ditches, most commonly associated with Bronze Age funerary or ceremonial monuments. In many cases they are all that survives of a round barrow, a low burial mound whose earthen body has been ploughed or eroded away over millennia, leaving only the encircling ditch as a faint scar in the subsoil. The site at Moanmore sits in low-lying, level wet pasture, and it was on an aerial photograph, catalogued under the Ordnance Survey reference OS 2433/4, that the enclosure first became apparent, a roughly circular cropmark or soilmark approximately ten metres in diameter. A second ring-ditch has been recorded around forty metres to the south, suggesting this corner of County Tipperary may preserve traces of a wider prehistoric landscape that the modern surface gives no hint of.

There is nothing to see here in any conventional sense. The field shows no earthwork, no rise, no depression. The site exists in the record rather than in the view, which is itself a useful reminder of how much of Ireland's prehistoric past has been absorbed back into the ground, detectable only when the right conditions of soil moisture and crop growth briefly make the buried geometry legible from the air.
