Ring-ditch, Moyge, Co. Cork

In the fields of Moyge in north County Cork, a circle roughly ten metres across lies invisible to anyone walking across it.

No bank, no wall, no obvious earthwork marks the spot. The only record of its existence comes from an aerial photograph taken in July 1989, in which the buried ditch, or fosse, of a small circular enclosure showed up as a cropmark, the faint differential in how grass or grain grows above disturbed soil that reveals, from the air, what centuries of ploughing have long since erased at ground level.

A ring-ditch of this kind is the ghostly remnant of a prehistoric or early medieval enclosure, most likely the ditch that once surrounded a burial mound, a small farmstead, or a ritual monument. At only ten metres in diameter, this one is on the intimate end of the scale. What makes the site at Moyge quietly interesting is not the ring-ditch alone but its neighbours. Two further circular enclosures lie close by to the north-east, one of comparable size at around ten metres across and another considerably larger at roughly sixty-five metres in diameter. Whether these features were related in function or period is unknown, but their proximity suggests that this particular stretch of north Cork held some significance across a long stretch of time, the kind of landscape where activity attracted further activity, generation after generation.
