Ring-ditch, Raheenduff, Co. Wexford

On a gentle west-facing slope in Raheenduff, County Wexford, two small enclosures lie buried in the ground, invisible to the naked eye and detectable only through the faint magnetic signatures left by their ancient ditches.

They were identified not by excavation but by a magnetic gradiometer survey, a technique that measures subtle variations in the earth's magnetic field to reveal buried features without disturbing the soil above them.

The survey, carried out in 2020 and covering an extensive area of the surrounding landscape, resolved two subrectangular enclosures defined by single fosses, that is, simple ditches forming a complete circuit around each. The larger measures approximately ten metres by seven, the smaller around seven metres by five. What makes the pairing quietly unusual is the relationship between them, or rather the absence of an obvious one. The smaller enclosure sits roughly twenty metres to the north of the larger, and the two are not aligned with each other, suggesting they may not have been conceived or constructed as a single planned arrangement. Further faint features were detected in the wider vicinity, hinting that the immediate area may have seen more activity than these two enclosures alone account for. Whether the enclosures are broadly contemporary or belong to different phases of use, the ground has not yet been opened to say.
