Ritual/Ceremonial
In a field at Scart in County Cork, a ring-ditch sits quietly in the landscape, the kind of feature that most people walk past without a second thought.
A ring-ditch is essentially a circular or near-circular trench cut into the ground, typically the eroded remnant of a burial mound or cairn whose raised earthen centre has long since been ploughed or weathered away. What remains is the negative space, the outline of something that was once deliberately constructed, most often during the Bronze Age. Seen from the air, these features resolve into crisp circles that reveal themselves with a clarity the ground-level view never quite offers.
