Ring-ditch, Smithstown, Co. Kilkenny

Beneath a ploughed field in Smithstown, Co. Kilkenny, a circular monument lies almost entirely erased, visible now only as a ghostly stain in the soil when crops grow unevenly above its buried outline.

It does not appear on any modern map as a named site or a protected ruin. The only way to see it at all is from above, via satellite imagery captured in April 2020, where the ring resolves itself into something unmistakable: a wide ditch, or fosse, enclosing a roughly circular interior space about ten metres across, with an overall diameter of around eighteen metres.

What exactly the monument once was is a matter of careful guesswork. A ring-ditch of this kind, defined by a broad fosse four to five metres wide, could originally have been a burial mound with an encircling ditch, the earthen mound long since eroded or deliberately removed. That possibility is strengthened by a find made in June 1968, when a Bronze Age decorated flat axe-head was recovered from a mound that was being levelled somewhere in the same townland, Smithstown Upper. The axe-head was noted and published by Prendergast in 1970, but the precise location of that mound was never recorded with enough accuracy to fix it on a map. The ring-ditch identified on the satellite image may well be the same feature. The monument also sits on the line of a field boundary running northeast to southwest, a boundary that appears on the first edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1839 and is still visible on a revision from 1948 to 1949, but which has since disappeared from the ground along with whatever remained of the earthwork itself. The timing suggests the mound and the boundary may have been cleared away together, two inconveniences removed in the same operation, leaving only a crop-mark to mark where something ancient once stood.
