The feature, known as a ring-ditch, is the remnant of a fosse, a dug enclosure or boundary channel, whose outline survives not as upstanding earthwork but as a cropmark, a phenomenon that occurs when buried features affect the growth of crops above them, producing subtle colour and height differences that only become apparent in aerial or satellite imagery.

This particular ring-ditch was identified and reported by Jean-Charles Caillère, who noticed its outline on Apple Maps satellite imagery. It does not sit in isolation. Roughly twenty-five metres to the north, a larger enclosure appears as a cropmark in the same imagery, and a second ring-ditch lies approximately ten metres to the south-south-east. The clustering of these features suggests that this small corner of Tipperary preserves traces of ancient activity whose precise nature and date remain unestablished, but whose spatial grouping hints at a landscape that was once deliberately organised and occupied. Ring-ditches of this kind are frequently associated with prehistoric funerary or ceremonial use, though without excavation it is impossible to say more about what this one represents.

Because the site exists only as a cropmark, there is nothing to see from the ground. The fields at Woodrooff look, to any visitor walking past, exactly like any other agricultural land in the area. The feature belongs to a category of archaeological site that is, in a very real sense, only visible to those who know to look, and know where and how to look.
