Ringfort, Ardnacrany, Co. Westmeath

A ringfort that has entirely disappeared above ground can sometimes tell you more about the Irish landscape than one still wearing its earthworks proudly.

At Ardnacrany in County Westmeath, what was once a substantial enclosed settlement on a prominent knoll has been levelled so completely that the only way to see it now is from the air, where it reveals itself as an oval cropmark roughly 40 metres north to south and 65 metres east to west. Cropmarks form when buried features, the ditches, banks, or filled pits of a former structure, affect the growth of crops or grass above them, producing faint but readable differences in colour or height that become visible in aerial photographs under the right conditions.

The site sits on a circular-shaped knoll, the kind of elevated ground that early medieval farming communities in Ireland favoured when enclosing their homesteads behind earthen banks and ditches. Ringforts, which date broadly from the early medieval period, were the most common form of rural settlement in Ireland at that time, and they were typically circular or near-circular enclosures protecting a farmstead and its inhabitants. What makes the Ardnacrany example useful to trace is the 1838 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, which records it clearly as a large circular enclosure, confirming that the earthworks were still legible in the landscape less than two centuries ago. Since then, agricultural activity has removed the visible remains entirely. The townland boundary with Lecade runs along a field fence less than ten metres to the east, meaning the site sits right at the edge of one named territory and the beginning of another, a proximity that may itself reflect older patterns of land division.
