Ringfort, Beaconstown, Co. Kildare

Somewhere beneath the farmland of Beaconstown in County Kildare, a circular enclosure roughly 33 metres across lies invisible to anyone walking the fields above it, yet reveals itself quite clearly from the air. The site is known only as a cropmark, a phenomenon in which buried archaeological features influence how plants grow at the surface. Where a filled ditch or disturbed soil retains more moisture, crops tend to grow taller and stay green longer; where compacted foundations lie close below, they may show stress. The result, when viewed from altitude during a dry summer, is a ghostly outline of a structure that has otherwise entirely disappeared into the ground.

This particular cropmark, circular in shape and consistent in character with the ringfort tradition common across Ireland, was identified in aerial imagery captured on 28 June 2018 via Google Earth. Ringforts, which typically date to the early medieval period, were enclosed farmsteads, the circular banks and ditches serving as a boundary between the domestic space of a family and the wider landscape, providing a degree of security for people and livestock. Thousands survive above ground across the country, but an unknown number exist only as subsurface traces of this kind, detectable purely through the patience of aerial observation and the accident of dry weather at the right time of year. The Beaconstown example was recorded following details provided by Jean-Charles Caillère, suggesting that sharp-eyed observers examining satellite imagery continue to add genuinely new sites to the archaeological map.
