This is a cashel, the Irish term for a ringfort built from drystone rather than earthen banks, and this particular example at Caheravoley measures roughly 45 metres in diameter. That is a substantial footprint, large enough to have enclosed a farmstead and its associated structures, though nothing of any internal arrangement survives to be read today.

Ringforts of this kind were the dominant settlement form in early medieval Ireland, built and occupied roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, and cashels in particular are common across the stony landscapes of Connacht where earth banks were less practical than the abundant local limestone. What adds a quiet dimension to this site is the presence of an extensive field system approximately 200 metres to the south-east. Field systems of this type, low stone-walled enclosures that divided the surrounding land into agricultural plots, are often directly associated with the nearby cashel and represent the working landscape that once surrounded and sustained it. Together, the enclosure and the fields give a faint but legible outline of an early farming settlement embedded in this rocky Galway terrain.
