Ringfort, Cappataggle, Co. Galway

What makes this site in Cappataggle quietly interesting is not what survives but what barely does.

Set in undulating grassland in east County Galway, the circular rath here has been reduced to little more than a suggestion in the landscape, its form recoverable only by reading the ground carefully. A rath is a ringfort, typically an enclosed farmstead of the early medieval period, defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches. Here, the enclosure, roughly 42 metres across, is traceable by a surviving bank running from the west through the north to the north-east, while elsewhere the boundary has eroded to a gentle scarp, a low sloping edge where a more substantial feature once stood.

What adds a layer of interest is a separate earthwork lying just to the east, divided from the rath by a shallow depression. This rectangular enclosure, oriented east to west and measuring approximately 23.5 metres in length by 17 metres in width, is defined by its own degraded earthen bank. The phrasing "possibly later" is doing quiet but significant work here: it suggests the two features were not necessarily built together, and that someone at some point found the ground beside an existing, perhaps already ancient, enclosure a useful place to construct something of a different shape and purpose. Whether that second structure was agricultural, domestic, or something else entirely is not recorded. The relationship between circular and rectangular earthworks on the same plot is not unusual in Irish archaeology, but it is rarely tidy to interpret.
