Ringfort, Carrowbunnaun, Co. Sligo

In the townland of Carrowbunnaun, in County Sligo, a ringfort sits in the landscape, largely unannounced.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths or lios depending on regional tradition, were the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically consisting of a circular area enclosed by one or more earthen banks and ditches. They served as farmsteads, dating broadly from around 500 to 1000 AD, and tens of thousands of them once existed across the country. Most were built for ordinary farming families rather than kings or chieftains, which is part of what makes their quiet persistence across Irish fields so striking. The one at Carrowbunnaun is among the many that have yet to attract detailed published attention, known to exist on the record but not yet accompanied by the kind of documented particulars that would allow a fuller account of its form, condition, or history.

The townland name itself offers a small clue to the character of the place. Carrowbunnaun derives from the Irish, with carrow indicating a quarter-land division, a unit of land measurement used in Connacht from medieval times, while bunnaun likely relates to a stream or river bottom. Sligo, as a county, is exceptionally rich in prehistoric and early medieval monuments, from the megalithic cemetery at Carrowmore to the numerous ringforts and enclosures scattered across its drumlins and coastal plains. The fort at Carrowbunnaun belongs to this broader pattern of settlement, part of a dense palimpsest of occupation that stretches back thousands of years across the west of Ireland, even where individual sites remain lightly documented.
