Ringfort, Cartrondoogan, Co. Galway

On a low rise in the rolling grassland of north County Galway, what looks at first like a gentle swell in a field turns out to be the worn remains of a structure that once defined someone's entire world.

The ringfort at Cartrondoogan is a circular enclosure roughly 28 metres across, and what survives of it tells a quietly interesting story about how much can disappear and how much can stubbornly remain.

A ringfort, in broad terms, is a roughly circular enclosed settlement, typically dating from the early medieval period in Ireland, perhaps between the fifth and twelfth centuries, and usually associated with a single farming household of some social standing. They were defined by earthen banks, ditches, or stone walls, and sometimes a combination of all three. At Cartrondoogan, the enclosure was built with two concentric banks and a fosse, the fosse being the ditch cut between them. A double-banked ringfort of this kind would generally have indicated a family of some local importance. The inner bank retains stone facing on its interior side, a detail that speaks to genuine craft in its original construction. The entrance causeway on the southern side, still measurable at around two metres wide, is where people and animals once passed in and out. The outer bank, however, has largely vanished; from the north-east around through east to south, the ground has levelled off completely, leaving only the inner earthwork to suggest the full shape of what once stood here.

The site sits in a landscape that has gradually absorbed it. The surviving banks and the partial fosse are easiest to read on the northern and western sides, where the earthworks remain most legible. The stone-faced inner bank is the detail most worth seeking out, a reminder that what appears to be a simple grass mound was once a carefully built boundary.
