Ringfort (Cashel), Aghalahard, Co. Mayo

In the rough pasture of Aghalahard, in County Mayo, a circular stone wall nearly two metres thick and nearly two metres high encloses a space about thirty-five metres across.

It is largely overgrown now, the stonework softened by vegetation, but the scale of what was built here is still legible. On the northern side, a small gap fitted with a lintel stone has been blocked up at some point; on the north-eastern side, a wider gap of about three metres may mark where the original entrance once stood.

This is a cashel, the Irish term for a stone-walled ringfort, a form of enclosed farmstead that was widespread across Ireland from roughly the Early Medieval period onwards. Where a rath used earthen banks and ditches, a cashel relied on dry-stone construction, and in the limestone-rich landscapes of Connacht the material was plentiful enough that walls of this solidity were not unusual. The site at Aghalahard was recorded in a 1994 archaeological survey of Ballinrobe and its surrounding district, compiled by D. Lavelle for the Lough Mask and Lough Carra Tourist Development Association. That survey documented the wall dimensions and noted the two gaps, leaving open the question of when and why the northern one was closed off, and whether the north-eastern opening was always the intended entrance or a later alteration.

The blocked lintel gap is the detail that lingers. Someone, at some point after the cashel's construction, decided to seal it. Whether that was a practical modification to the enclosure, a response to changed land use, or something else entirely, the record does not say. The wall simply stands there in the pasture, holding its shape and holding its silence.
