A cashel is a type of ringfort built from dry-stone walling rather than earthen banks, and the tradition of enclosing a homestead or small settlement within a roughly circular stone boundary runs deep in early medieval Ireland, broadly from around the fifth to the twelfth centuries. Most were farmsteads, home to a single family and their livestock, and they appear across the country in their thousands, though the west of Ireland, with its abundance of surface stone, produced a particularly dense concentration of the dry-stone variety.

An Fál Mór, whose name translates loosely from Irish as "the great hedge" or "the great enclosure", sits in a part of Mayo where the land carries the marks of long habitation, layer upon layer of agricultural and settlement history pressed into bog, field, and hillside. The cashel here belongs to that wider pattern, a stone circle drawn around a life now long gone, its builders unknown and its precise history unrecorded in any detail that has yet reached the public domain.
