Ringfort (Cashel), Barnacahoge, Co. Mayo

On the outer wall of a stone ringfort in Barnacahoge, County Mayo, there is a flight of three small steps, just 55 centimetres wide, built directly into the exterior face.

They lead nowhere obvious, and their purpose is unclear. This detail alone sets the site apart from the hundreds of similar monuments scattered across the Irish countryside.

A cashel is a ringfort defined by a stone wall rather than an earthen bank, and this example sits on a gentle rise amid a landscape of mixed pasture and bog. Its circular enclosure measures roughly 23 metres in internal diameter, defined by a drystone wall that is still partially standing but has suffered considerably over time. The northern half of the circuit retains the most coherent stretches of exterior walling, reaching two metres at the north-east, built in rough courses with the largest stones at the base. Further around the circuit, the picture reverses: the exterior face on the southern arc has collapsed to a low scatter of stone, while the inner face stands comparatively well, in places reaching two metres, though sections of it appear to have been at least partly rebuilt at some point. The original entrance is no longer identifiable. A gap four metres wide at the north may represent a collapsed section, and a narrower possible break at the north-west seems to have been deliberately blocked up at some stage. Abutting the south-east of the cashel is a rectangular enclosure bounded by a drystone wall, roughly eleven metres by five. To the east, a drystone-bordered trackway runs from a derelict farmstead about 60 metres to the north, skirting the cashel on its way. A rectangular building shown pressing against the eastern side of the cashel on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1838 has since been removed entirely.

What the site illustrates particularly well is the layered quality of occupation around these ancient enclosures. The farmstead, the trackway, the now-vanished building mapped in the nineteenth century, and those puzzling exterior steps all speak to centuries of low-level, pragmatic engagement with a structure that was ancient long before any of those later additions were made.
