Ringfort (Cashel), Barrow, Co. Kerry

In a gently sloping pasture in Barrow, County Kerry, a faint circle in the land marks the remains of a cashel, a type of ringfort defined by a stone enclosure rather than a purely earthen bank.

What makes this one quietly compelling is its understatement: the enclosing bank of earth and stone is very low, barely asserting itself above the surrounding grass, and its dimensions, roughly 31 metres north to south and 35 metres east to west, suggest a modest but deliberate enclosure. A possible entrance feature survives at the south-west, which was a common orientation for ringfort entrances in early medieval Ireland, likely chosen to face away from prevailing Atlantic weather.

Ringforts, known variously as raths or cashels depending on their construction, were the dominant settlement type in early medieval Ireland, typically serving as enclosed farmsteads for a single family and their livestock. Thousands survive across the country, though many exist now only as slight earthworks of the kind seen here. A souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage often used for storage or refuge, was recorded in association with this site, but no physical trace of it could be identified on inspection. Its disappearance is not unusual; souterrains collapse or are deliberately infilled over the centuries, leaving the surface above them unmarked.
