Ringfort (Cashel), Caherdaly, Co. Galway

A narrow country lane runs straight through what was once a defended enclosure at Caherdaly in County Galway, bisecting a circular cashel that has been quietly dissolving into the landscape for centuries.

A cashel is a ringfort built from stone rather than earthen banks, and this one, roughly fifty metres across, survives only in fragments. The boreen passes through it at the north and south, and to the east of that lane nothing of the enclosing wall remains visible at all.

What can still be traced is a collapsed drystone wall, the kind built without mortar, relying entirely on the careful stacking of stone. From the south around to the west, a later field wall has been laid directly on top of the earlier structure, borrowing its line and its material in the way that farmers have always done when a convenient ready-dressed stone supply presented itself. Only very slight traces survive from the west around to the north, and the surrounding grassland and rock outcrop give little away. The cashel at Caherdaly belongs to a class of monument common across the west of Ireland during the early medieval period, typically associated with a single farming household of some local standing, though here the record is too worn to say anything more particular about who built it or when.

For anyone inclined to look, the site rewards patience and a reasonable eye for subtle ground disturbance. The collapsed wall is more readable from the western arc than anywhere else, and the point where the boreen slices through the monument gives a useful sense of the original circuit. The rock outcrop breaking through the surrounding grassland is characteristic of this part of Galway, and the later field wall overlying the southern stretch is in some ways the most legible feature remaining, its borrowed foundation line still following the curve of something much older.
