Ringfort (Cashel), Cahermackirilla, Co. Clare

At Cahermackirilla in County Clare, a cashel sits in a shallow fold at the foot of a north-facing slope, surrounded by rough pasture and quietly absorbing centuries of reuse.

A cashel is a ringfort defined by a stone rather than an earthen enclosure, and this one measures just over twenty metres across in either direction, its perimeter formed by a double-faced drystone wall. What makes the site slightly disorienting at first glance is the degree to which later building has grafted itself onto the ancient fabric. Walls have been added over walls, structures have been raised on the accumulated stone spill inside the perimeter, and two rectangular drystone enclosures lean against the outer face to the north and east. The result is less a preserved monument than a palimpsest of practical stonework, each generation borrowing from the one before.

The cashel was recorded on the Ordnance Survey twenty-five-inch plan of 1897 and again on the six-inch edition of 1920, mapped with the hachuring that surveyors used to indicate earthworks and enclosures of that kind. Its wall, between 2.2 and 3.3 metres wide, still stands to an external height of around one metre in places, though the interior face is largely hidden beneath a spread of collapsed stone. The two structures added to the outer wall are not ancient in character; the northern one, internally about seven metres by three metres, retains walls rising to one and a half metres, while the eastern one is more ruinous but retains a doorway and even a small cupboard niche in its east wall, details that suggest it was used as a shelter or small outbuilding within living memory. A hut site lies roughly eighty metres to the south-east and a further enclosure sits about eighty-five metres to the north-north-east, suggesting this was once part of a broader spread of activity across the immediate landscape.
