Ringfort (Cashel), Cahermurphy, Co. Clare

Near the crest of Cahermurphy Hill, an almost circular stone enclosure sits in the kind of quiet prominence that suggests its builders chose the location with purpose.

This is a cashel, the term used in the west of Ireland for a ringfort whose boundary is a substantial drystone wall rather than an earthen bank. What makes this one worth pausing over is the quality of its construction. The wall, built from small flags laid without mortar, still measures between 4.5 and 5.8 metres in width, and in places the original outer facing survives to a height of 1.7 metres, particularly along the southern and south-western arc. The wall also carries a noticeable batter, meaning it leans slightly inward as it rises, a deliberate structural technique that gives the structure both stability and a faintly imposing profile.

The enclosure measures roughly 39 metres east to west and 32 metres north to south. A flat outer terrace runs around much of the circumference, visible from the south-east round to the north, and an entrance nearly 5.2 metres wide at the north-east may be original, though it has been partially blocked by a later wall addition. The interior slopes gently to the south and is uneven underfoot. Against the northern interior face of the enclosing wall, a well-defined hut site survives, the kind of small domestic structure that would once have sheltered the people who lived within the cashel's protection. Cashels of this type are generally associated with early medieval settlement in Ireland, roughly the period between the fifth and twelfth centuries, when enclosed farmsteads were the common unit of rural life across the country. The site was noted by the antiquarian Thomas Johnson Westropp in 1911, who documented many of Clare's stone forts during his surveys of the region.
