Ringfort (Cashel), Cappaclogh, Co. Kerry

On a north-facing slope above Tralee Bay, a roughly circular cashel sits so quietly that its defining feature is now partly underground and largely blocked.

Known as Lios na nGamhan, this is a cashel, the stone-built equivalent of an earthen ringfort, a type of enclosed settlement widely built across Ireland during the early medieval period. What makes this particular example quietly compelling is not its grandeur but the opposite: the enclosing bank of loose stones has slumped to a maximum of 0.7 metres internally, and a disused laneway has eaten through the bank entirely along the south-eastern edge. Only a single large horizontal slab to the south may survive from the original inner wall-face, a lone indicator of what the structure once looked like.

Beneath the interior, a little west-northwest of centre, lies a souterrain, an underground stone-built chamber of the kind commonly associated with early medieval settlement sites in Ireland, probably used for storage or refuge. At Lios na nGamhan, the souterrain consists of an oval drystone chamber measuring roughly 2.5 metres by 1.15 metres, its walls inclining inward to narrow the space to about 0.85 metres at roof level, where four capstones sit approximately 0.9 metres above the floor. A passage once led away to the northwest through a 0.7-metre-wide opening in the south-western wall, but it is now blocked by collapse within about a metre of the entrance. The chamber itself became accessible when a roofing slab was removed, but an accumulation of earth and stones beneath the opening makes it difficult to enter. The site was documented by J. Cuppage in the 1986 Corca Dhuibhne archaeological survey of the Dingle Peninsula, which catalogued it as entry number 553.
