Ringfort (Cashel), Cashel, Co. Mayo

A low, circular platform sitting on a ridge in rough Co. Mayo pasture might easily be dismissed as a trick of the terrain, but this particular mound carries a quiet puzzle in its very name.

The townland here is called Cashel, and a cashel is a type of early medieval stone-walled enclosure, essentially a fortified farmstead defended by a drystone wall rather than an earthen bank. Yet the structure on this ridge shows no surviving stonework at all. What remains is an earthen platform, roughly 22 metres across, defined by a worn scarp rather than any wall, with an uneven interior scattered with low hummocks and shallow depressions. A slight dip in the scarp on the south-east side may mark an original entrance, though it is too eroded to say with confidence.

The site's ambiguity deepens when you look at the cartographic record. The 1838 Ordnance Survey six-inch map does not mark any enclosure here at all, though it does name the surrounding cluster of houses 'Cashel'. Crucially, that name appears in ordinary roman lettering rather than the gothic script the OS conventionally used to flag antiquities, which suggests the surveyors either did not recognise a monument or did not consider one to be present. By the 1922 edition, a hachured circular enclosure is shown on the same spot. Whether the structure was simply missed in 1838, or whether it had become more visible by the early twentieth century, is unclear. The leading interpretation is that this earthen platform may represent the heavily degraded remains of a cashel, its stone long since robbed out or buried, and that the settlement name preserves the memory of a structure that the landscape itself has almost entirely swallowed. If so, it would make this modest mound not just a monument in its own right, but the origin point of a place name that has outlasted the building it once described.
