The stone-walled enclosure measures 14.6 metres across from east to west and 11.3 metres from north to south, creating an almost circular defensive space that would have once protected a small farming community. The builders cleverly incorporated natural rock outcrops into the wall construction, blending human ingenuity with the rugged landscape that characterises this part of Donegal.

Today, the cashel walls have largely collapsed, though their outline remains clearly visible amongst the sparse, rough vegetation that covers the site. A gap measuring 2.7 metres on the western side marks what appears to have been the original entrance, where residents and their livestock would have passed through centuries ago. The eastern section has suffered from stone robbing over the years; someone has constructed a modern square structure here using the pilfered materials, whilst at the southeast corner, the beginnings of another modern wall extend from the ancient circuit.

This ringfort represents one of thousands scattered across Ireland, dating primarily from the early medieval period (roughly 500 to 1200 CE). These enclosed farmsteads served as both homes and defensive structures for farming families, offering protection for people, cattle, and grain stores. The Cloghboy cashel, with its strategic position on the ridge bench and sturdy stone construction, would have been a prominent feature in the medieval landscape, serving as both a practical dwelling and a symbol of status for its inhabitants.
