Ringfort (Cashel), Corwillick, Co. Sligo

Tucked into deciduous forest on a level terrace cut into the side of a large hill in County Sligo, this cashel sits just ten metres north of a steep southward drop, a placement that suggests its builders were thinking carefully about both visibility and defence.

A cashel is a type of ringfort enclosed by a stone wall rather than an earthen bank, and what survives here is a raised circular area roughly 26 metres in diameter, wrapped in a broad bank of rubble limestone nearly five metres wide. Unusually, there is no fosse, the surrounding ditch that typically accompanies such enclosures, visible at ground level, and the bank shows no dressed facing stone around its exterior. A two-metre gap in the southern side of the bank marks where the original entrance once stood.

What makes the interior particularly interesting is the evidence of deliberate construction beyond the enclosing wall itself. The eastern half of the enclosed space has been built up with rubble limestone to create a roughly rectangular raised platform, approximately eleven metres north to south and ten metres east to west, defined by a low stone scarp that ties into the inner face of the cashel bank at the north-east and south-east. At the centre of this platform lie the remains of a souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage or chamber of the kind commonly associated with early medieval settlement in Ireland, used variously for storage, refuge, or ventilation. Their presence within cashels is well documented across the country, though each example tends to reflect its own particular arrangement of the interior space. Here, the combination of the built-up platform and the souterrain suggests a site that was actively organised and occupied rather than simply enclosed.
