Ringfort (Cashel), Derreen, Co. Clare

On a low north-western terrace of Knockaunsmountain in County Clare, a roughly circular stone enclosure sits quietly within a large ancient field system, almost unremarkable at ground level but clearly legible from above.

The cashel, which is the term for a stone-walled ringfort as distinct from the earthen-banked variety, measures approximately 25 metres in diameter. What makes this particular site quietly arresting is not the enclosure itself but its company: it does not stand alone.

Ortho photography captured between 2005 and 2012 reveals that a second possible cashel sits directly to the east, immediately adjacent. Three further cashels lie within 60 to 100 metres to the north-west, north, and north-east respectively, all of them part of the same large field system on the slopes of Knockaunsmountain. Cashels of this kind are generally associated with the early medieval period in Ireland, when farming families of some local standing would enclose their homestead within a stone wall for security and to define their territory. Finding one is unremarkable across much of Munster. Finding four or five in such close proximity, clustered on a single mountain terrace and apparently integrated into a shared field system, is a different matter entirely. It raises questions about how this landscape was organised and settled, whether by a single extended family farming adjacent plots over generations or by a community whose spatial logic is no longer easy to read.
