Ringfort (Cashel), Derrineden, Co. Kerry

On the north-eastern end of the Coomduff ridge in south Kerry, a cashel sits in a state of deliberate incompleteness.

A cashel, or caher, is a stone-walled ringfort, the dry-stone equivalent of the more familiar earthen rath, and this one is unusual not because it has crumbled through neglect alone but because agricultural land clearance removed the greater part of it. Only the southern sector survives, its enclosing wall collapsed downslope and partially buried under the debris of the very field-clearance operations that destroyed the rest. What remains is, in a sense, a record of two different kinds of erasure: the slow collapse of early medieval structures, and the more deliberate reshaping of the landscape by later farming.

This is one of four cahers grouped together on the Coomduff ridge, all of them positioned to look out over the Cummeragh river valley towards Lough Currane to the south-west. The surviving wall measures around 1.5 metres wide and stands to an internal height of 1.8 metres at its best-preserved point. Within the interior, two hut foundations sit side by side near the centre of the site. The western one survives as a semicircular arc of drystone walling enclosing a shallow hollow roughly 4 metres across. The second is circular, with an internal diameter of 4.5 metres and walls still standing to about 0.8 metres. Just south-west of this second hut, a souterrain opens into the ground. A souterrain is an underground passage, typically drystone-built, used in early medieval Ireland for storage or as a place of refuge. This one runs northward for 3 metres before turning to the east-south-east for a further 2 metres, where fallen roofing lintels now block any further progress into the dark.
