Ringfort (Cashel), Derrylehan, Co. Sligo

At Derrylehan in County Sligo, a cashel sits in gently undulating pasture, its ancient limestone walls quietly absorbed into the working landscape around it.

A cashel is a stone-walled ringfort, the less common cousin of the earthen rath, and this one is circular, spanning twenty-nine metres in diameter. What makes it particularly odd to look at is the way its fabric has been cannibalised over time: sections of the original enclosure wall have been reduced to their footings on the north-east and east sides, and the internal face of the wall in that same stretch has been rebuilt as a drystone field wall, thinner and lower than what stood before. The original large basal blocks survive beneath it, and the external facing of un-coursed limestone rubble is still visible to the north-east, giving the wall a split identity, part ancient enclosure, part agricultural convenience.

The cashel's wall is substantial where it survives intact, standing around one and a half metres high both internally and externally, and nearly two and a half metres thick. It was built without mortar, the limestone rubble laid without coursing in the manner typical of early medieval stone enclosures in Ireland. Unlike many ringforts, there is no fosse, the surrounding ditch that would normally accompany an earthen example, which is unsurprising given that the stone wall itself served the defensive and boundary function. Two later field walls have been added against its exterior, one running east to west and connecting to the wall's outer face at the west-north-west, another running north-west to south-east abutting the footings to the north-east, illustrating how thoroughly the site was woven into post-medieval farming patterns. The original entrance has been lost entirely. At the centre of the interior, the remains of a souterrain survive. A souterrain is an underground stone-lined passage or chamber, typically associated with early medieval settlement sites and used variously for storage, refuge, or ventilation.
