Ringfort (Cashel), Doire Fhionáin Beag, Co. Kerry

A stream runs between two stone forts on the lower slopes of Cahernageeha mountain in south Kerry, and that small detail says something curious about how ancient settlements clustered in this landscape.

The lesser-known of the pair sits on a rocky knoll at Doire Fhionáin Beag, roughly 130 metres west of the more substantial Caherdaniel fort. A caher is a stone-walled ringfort, the dry-stone equivalent of the earthen raths found across much of Ireland, and this one is a notably battered example. Its enclosing wall, averaging 3.5 metres wide, survives to a maximum internal height of just 1.4 metres at its northern arc. Stone facing is only visible in patches: thin slabs on the inner face, larger block-like slabs set in rough random courses on the exterior. Much of the rest has collapsed and tumbled down the sides of the knoll.

The interior, roughly 21 to 23 metres across, is level but far from clear. Loose stone lies scattered across it, and low irregular mounds of rubble sit without any discernible arrangement, offering no obvious indication of former structures or domestic features. A modern stone wall cuts across the north-eastern quadrant, a reminder that these sites were rarely left entirely alone by later generations, who found ready-cut building material in their tumbled walls. The survey of the Iveragh Peninsula compiled by A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan, published by Cork University Press in 1996, describes the site as poorly preserved, which is an accurate if understated assessment. What makes it worth noting is less what survives and more what the pairing with its larger neighbour suggests: that this corner of the Kerry uplands was once deliberately, carefully occupied, with settlements placed in close proximity and divided only by the small formality of a running stream.
