Ringfort (Cashel), Eantybeg, Co. Clare

At Eantybeg in County Clare, a low ring of stones barely interrupts the rough pasture around it, yet it preserves enough detail to tell a quiet story about successive human decisions made centuries apart.

The structure is a cashel, a type of ringfort defined by a stone wall rather than an earthen bank, and this one has been worn down to little more than a footing, its wall surviving to a height of just half a metre to under a metre in most places.

The cashel is subcircular in plan, measuring roughly 31.7 metres north to south and 24.5 metres east to west, and sits near the bottom of a south-facing slope within what appears to be a large field system spanning multiple periods of use. Its original entrance, at the south-south-west and originally 2.6 metres wide, was later deliberately narrowed to 0.8 metres by packing stones into its eastern side. That modification suggests the enclosure continued to be used, and adapted, long after it was first built. A large flat slab, 1.3 metres long and likely a former lintel, now lies on the ground roughly two metres west of the entrance, dislodged at some point from its original position. A separate, modern gap has been cut through the southern wall, adding another layer to the site's accumulated alterations. The interior is slightly domed, a result of material accumulating over time, rising between 0.3 and 0.7 metres above the wall footing on most sides, though reaching 1.6 metres at the north to north-east, where the natural slope behind it is steepest.

What gives the site a particular texture is the way its modifications are still legible. The narrowed entrance, the displaced lintel, the domed interior, each reflects a different moment of use or neglect, all compressed into a modest oval of stones in a Clare field.
