Ringfort (Cashel), Graigue, Co. Sligo

In a field at Graigue in County Sligo, an oval enclosure sits quietly behind walls that have been standing, in some form, for well over a thousand years.

What makes this particular site worth a second look is its classification as a cashel, a type of ringfort defined by its use of stone rather than earthen banks. Most Irish ringforts were built from raised earthworks, so the presence here of a substantial wall constructed from large stones mixed with earth marks it out as something slightly different from the typical profile of early medieval rural settlement.

The enclosure measures roughly 36 metres north to south and 31 metres east to west on its interior, making it a reasonably substantial example of its kind. Beyond the wall itself, the site is further defined by an external fosse, a defensive ditch encircling the outer face of the structure, which would have reinforced the sense of a bounded, protected space. The entrance is positioned at the south-west and is stone-lined, a detail that suggests some care was taken in its construction. Cashels of this type are generally associated with the early medieval period in Ireland, when ringforts served as the primary form of enclosed farmstead for farming families of varying social rank. This one is a designated National Monument in State care, recorded as No. 153 under that scheme.
