Ringfort (Cashel), Graigues (Connello Lower By.), Co. Limerick

A stone wall that was old when the 1923 Ordnance Survey captured it as a hachured circle on paper is now almost entirely swallowed by scrub in County Limerick.

What survives above the vegetation line amounts to little more than a short stretch of enclosing bank, and yet even that fragment tells you something useful about what once stood here.

A cashel is a ringfort built from stone rather than earthen banks, a form of enclosed farmstead common across Ireland from the early medieval period onwards. This particular example in Graigues, in the old barony of Connello Lower, measured approximately thirty metres in diameter as recorded on the six-inch Ordnance Survey map of 1923. The bank itself is not insubstantial: where it can still be examined along the trackway running from north-northwest to northeast, the internal height reaches around 1.15 metres and the external face rises to roughly 1.35 metres, presenting a sheer wall to anyone approaching along that route. Cattle have worn down the bank at the north-northwest point, where they have evidently been moving in and out of the interior for some time, which gives a sense of how gradually a site like this is reshaped by ordinary agricultural use rather than deliberate clearance. The record was compiled by Denis Power and uploaded to the survey in August 2011.

The interior is currently inaccessible due to dense overgrowth, so a visit rewards patience rather than exploration. What a careful observer can do is trace the line of the trackway and look for the sheer external face of the bank where it meets the path, which remains the most legible section of the structure. The surrounding scrub makes orientation difficult, and the site is not marked in any conspicuous way, so the 1923 OS six-inch map remains a useful reference for understanding where the full circuit of the enclosure once ran.
