Ringfort (Cashel), Inishgort, Co. Galway

At the southern tip of Inishgort, a small island off the Galway coast, a grassed-over circular wall marks the outline of a cashel, a type of stone ringfort built without mortar, whose walls once enclosed a small farmstead or defended settlement.

It sits roughly 42 metres north of a large storm beach, and not far south of a possible promontory fort whose own earthen rampart occupies the island's edge. What makes the arrangement quietly arresting is the layering of occupation visible even now: the cashel's original fabric has been built over, built against, and gradually absorbed by later structures, each generation of use leaving its own partial signature on the ground.

The cashel itself measures around 20 metres across internally and up to 26 metres east to west on the outside, with surviving wall height ranging between roughly 0.3 and 2.5 metres depending on where you measure. Recorded by M. Gibbons, the site retains traces of the outer wall-face at the north-east, still standing one course high. Inside, the south-west sector holds the remains of a house site, while the south-east portion is less distinct, its grassed-over walling interpreted as a possibly later building that actually overlies the cashel wall itself. On the western side, a separate rectangular structure measuring approximately 4 by 3 metres abuts the cashel wall from outside. A midden, the accumulated debris of domestic life, food waste, shells, ash and discarded objects, lies about 7 metres to the south-south-west, hinting at sustained habitation across more than one period.

The site is accessible only by boat, given Inishgort's island setting, and the storm beach immediately to the south gives a sense of the exposure these inhabitants accepted as ordinary. Much of the archaeology is low-lying and grass-covered, so what you see is largely a matter of reading subtle changes in ground level rather than dramatic standing stonework. The midden, the overlapping walls, and the small rectangular annexe together make this a site where looking carefully rewards the effort considerably more than a quick glance would suggest.
