Ringfort (Cashel), Killaturly, Co. Mayo

A later farmer has driven a drystone wall straight through the middle of this ancient enclosure, bisecting it as neatly as a property line on a map, which is exactly what it became.

The cashel at Killaturly sits on a low rise in County Mayo, its circular form still readable in the landscape despite centuries of agricultural afterthought. A cashel is a ringfort defined by a stone rather than earthen boundary, a form of enclosed farmstead typically dating to the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to twelfth centuries. Here, the enclosing bank is sod-covered stone, running about 22 metres across, and still holds enough height on its south-eastern side to give a clear sense of how deliberately it was built.

The bank itself, between two and two and a half metres wide, rises roughly a metre on the north-western exterior and a metre and a half on the south-east, suggesting either differential survival or the original builders paying closer attention to one approach than another. What complicates the picture now is the visible layering of later land use on top of the earlier structure. A drystone property wall about a metre wide cuts through the interior on a north-north-west to south-south-east axis, and a separate east-west field wall meets the old bank at the north-east corner, where someone has expanded the junction with field clearance stones, the loose rock gathered during ploughing or grazing improvement. More heaps of such stones sit on top of the bank itself and along its eastern and south-eastern exterior slope, the accumulated debris of generations working the surrounding ground and depositing what they turned up somewhere convenient. The interior is now grass, with brambles pushing in around the perimeter, the slow reclamation that tends to follow wherever livestock no longer graze closely.
