The kink is not accidental. It follows, almost faithfully, the curve of a cashel, a type of early medieval stone ringfort defined by a roughly circular enclosing wall, that has been largely swallowed by the landscape around it.

The structure measures approximately 23 metres across its northeast to southwest axis, which places it within the typical size range for a cashel of this kind. What survives above ground is an overgrown spread of stone running from the northeast around to the south, but later field boundaries have complicated the picture considerably. One wall has been built directly on top of the cashel from the southwest, and it is the slight deviation in its course, bending to accommodate the older structure beneath, that gives the game away. A second boundary cuts across the site from west to northeast, and beyond that line, to the northwest, no trace of the original cashel wall can be seen at all. A third wall branches off from the east side. The cumulative effect is of a very old enclosure that has been gradually absorbed into the agricultural infrastructure of the townland, its stones reused, its form obscured, its presence reduced to a kink in a line that most people would pass without a second glance.

Aerial photography has been instrumental in reading the site, since it is the kind of place that reveals far more from above than it does at ground level. The subtle crop and grass variations that show up in aerial imagery can trace boundaries invisible to a person standing in the field itself.
