Ringfort (Cashel), Kiltullagh, Co. Galway

A cashel is a type of early medieval ringfort enclosed by a stone wall rather than an earthen bank, and the one that once sat on a ridge in the undulating grassland at Kiltullagh in County Galway is now, for all practical purposes, gone.

What makes this site quietly remarkable is not what survives but the speed of its disappearance, and the fact that someone was there to record each stage of the loss.

When the archaeologist Cody first visited in 1977, a subcircular enclosure was still legible on the ground, its drystone wall collapsed but present, measuring roughly 44 metres north to south and 39 metres east to west. A field wall had already been driven through the monument from east to west, and a low bank of uncertain age ran northward and then eastward from the site. A small subrectangular mound of earth and stone, about 7 metres long and 4 metres wide, sat some 8 metres to the north-east; whether it had any connection to the cashel, or any archaeological significance at all, was never established. When Cody returned in 1983, the northern half of the monument had been levelled during land reclamation. By 1984, a further visit found no visible surface trace remaining on either side of the field wall that had cut through it. Within the span of seven years, what had been a legible, if damaged, early medieval enclosure had been reduced to nothing a visitor could see.

The ridge at Kiltullagh now offers grassland and little else, at least above ground. The field wall that helped erase the cashel is likely still there, doing what field walls do, indifferent to what lies beneath.
