Ringfort (Cashel), Lisheenacrannagh, Co. Galway

On a north-west-facing slope in Lisheenacrannagh, County Galway, a low hill holds the remains of a cashel, a type of stone-walled ringfort, that has been slowly losing its shape to the land around it for centuries.

Cashels were built from dry-laid stone without mortar, the weight and careful arrangement of the rock doing the structural work, and this one originally measured around 34 metres in diameter. What makes it quietly odd is how thoroughly the modern landscape has absorbed it: a field wall built in a later era runs directly over the inner wall from the north around to the east, treating the ancient structure as little more than a convenient foundation.

What survives is fragmentary but legible if you know what to look for. The inner wall has largely collapsed and become grassed over, but a stretch of stone-facing remains visible at the south-west, giving a sense of how the original construction once appeared. Between the inner wall and a low outer wall to the south-east runs a fosse, a defensive ditch, now grassed over like the walls themselves. A gap of roughly two metres at the south-south-east may be the original entrance, the point through which people and livestock would have passed in and out of the enclosed space. Inside the north-north-east portion of the interior, a ruined house sits within the old boundary, a later intrusion into an already ancient space, though its own age is unrecorded here. The layering of occupation, a prehistoric or early medieval enclosure, a ruined house of uncertain date, and a modern field wall, tells a compressed story about how land in the west of Ireland tends to be used and reused across generations without ceremony or record.
