Ringfort (Cashel), Lisket, Co. Clare

Most ringforts in Ireland are roughly circular, so the large rectangular cashel at Lisket in County Clare already stands apart before you have looked closely at anything else.

A cashel is a ringfort defined by a stone wall rather than an earthen bank, and this one is substantial: its interior measures sixty metres east to west and thirty-four metres north to south, enclosing an area that would have felt considerable to whoever built and used it. The defining wall has largely collapsed, now reading as a spread of rubble roughly four to five metres wide and less than a metre high on either face, but at the north-west corner something more instructive survives: a line of large upright slabs, each about a metre long and a metre tall, preserving a clear sense of how the outer wall-face was originally constructed.

The site sits on a gentle south-facing slope at the edge of a shallow east-west valley, embedded within what has been identified as a large multiperiod field system, meaning the landscape around it carries the layered traces of agricultural organisation from several different eras. Inside the cashel, those layers become more legible. At the north-east edge of the interior there is a souterrain, an underground passage or chamber typically associated with early medieval settlement, used for storage or as a place of refuge. Scattered across the interior, lower and slighter drystone wall remnants point to activity that came later, including a small rectangular house site in the south-west corner, its interior measuring roughly five metres by five. These later features suggest the enclosure continued to be used, or reused, well after its original function had changed or faded. A second cashel lies approximately ninety-five metres to the north-east, hinting that this part of Lisket was once a more organised and populated place than its current state of briars and blackthorn would suggest.
