Ringfort (Cashel), Lismakeery, Co. Limerick

There is something quietly unsettling about a monument that exists only as a circle on an old map.

In the pastureland around Lismakeery in County Limerick, a cashel once occupied a modest footprint in the landscape. A cashel is a type of ringfort defined by a stone enclosure wall rather than an earthen bank, typically associated with early medieval settlement in Ireland, often enclosing a farmstead or small community. This one, however, is gone entirely, its stones long since redistributed or absorbed into field boundaries, leaving the ground as level and unremarkable as the surrounding pasture.

What we know of this site comes from the 1923 Ordnance Survey six-inch map, which recorded it as a hachured circular area, the conventional cartographic shorthand for a low earthwork or enclosure, with a diameter of approximately ten metres. That is a small footprint even by the standards of minor ringforts, and it suggests a structure of modest scale rather than a seat of any local significance. The record was compiled by Denis Power and uploaded to the national monument database in August 2011, by which point the monument had already been levelled, with no extant trace remaining above ground.

There is, in practical terms, nothing to see at Lismakeery. The site sits in low-lying level pasture, and without the 1923 map as a reference, there would be no indication that anything had ever stood here. That absence is, in its own way, the point. The record documents not a place to visit but a place to account for, a small entry in the longer process of cataloguing what Ireland once held before agricultural improvement, land clearance, and the general attrition of centuries erased it. For anyone interested in the archaeology of erasure as much as the archaeology of survival, the gap where this cashel stood is at least worth knowing about.
