Ringfort (Cashel), Machaire Dromann, Fánaid Thuaidh, Co. Donegal

In the marshy lands of Machaire Dromann in north County Donegal, just 20 metres south of a river, sits an intriguing archaeological puzzle atop a rocky outcrop.

What remains today is a circular stone enclosure, its walls now heavily robbed of their original stones and standing at just 0.7 metres high. These weathered remains form a cashel, a type of stone ringfort that would have once served as a fortified homestead during Ireland's early medieval period.

At the heart of this ancient enclosure lies a mysterious mound, catalogued as DG011-051002 by archaeologists. Even experts struggle to determine whether this central feature is a natural formation or something deliberately constructed by human hands centuries ago. This uncertainty adds to the site's enigmatic character; it could be the remains of a dwelling platform, a burial feature, or simply a quirk of the underlying geology that the fort's builders chose to incorporate into their design.

The site was documented during the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, conducted by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983. Their work catalogued field antiquities spanning from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century, providing valuable insights into Donegal's rich archaeological heritage. The cashel's location, surrounded by marshy ground yet built on solid rock, demonstrates the careful site selection practised by early medieval communities, who needed both defensive advantages and access to water whilst avoiding the worst of the boggy terrain.
