Ringfort (Cashel), Mangerton, Co. Kerry

On the southern slope of Mangerton Mountain in County Kerry, a roughly circular stone enclosure sits within a web of old field boundaries that have long since stopped marking anything a living farmer tends.

This is a cashel, the Irish term for a ringfort built from drystone rather than earthen banks, and this particular example measures about 26 metres east to west and 23.5 metres north to south. Its builders solved an awkward problem with quiet ingenuity: because the ground falls away downhill, the northern portion of the interior was cut back into the slope, while the southern portion was built up, leaving the enclosed ground more or less level, though a gentle tilt toward the south remains.

The cashel wall still stands to roughly a metre in height along its western to eastern arc, though it drops to as little as 20 centimetres and disappears under grass on the eastern to western side. A possible entrance, about 1.6 metres wide, opens at the south-southwest. Loose stones lie scattered along the inner face of the wall between northwest and northeast, suggesting some degree of collapse or disturbance over the centuries. The site has also been quietly reworked in more recent times: a modern east-west wall now cuts across the interior north of centre, and a small triangular enclosure has been built into the northwest quadrant, reusing the old cashel wall as one of its sides. It functions today as a sheep pen, which says something about the durability of the original construction even as its original purpose has been entirely forgotten. A separate field enclosure lies about 38 metres to the southeast, and a boundary wall from the surrounding network of relict field systems runs away from the cashel's southeastern arc, hinting that this was once part of a much larger organised landscape on the mountain's lower slopes.
