Ringforts
In the townland of Monanoe in County Clare, a cashel sits in the landscape largely unannounced.
A cashel is a ringfort built from stone rather than earthen banks, a circular enclosure that would have defined the boundary of a farmstead during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. Thousands of these structures survive across Ireland, yet each occupies its own particular ground, its own arrangement of field and hill, and the one at Monanoe is no exception to the quiet individuality that makes these sites worth noticing.
