Ringfort (Cashel), Oirear Dhumhaí Mór, Co. Donegal

On a level plain of light soil overlooking the sea in Oirear Dhumhaí Mór, County Donegal, there once stood what early Ordnance Survey maps labelled simply as 'The Fort'.

The first and second editions of the 6-inch OS maps, drawn up in the 19th century, depicted it as an oval enclosure measuring roughly 20 to 25 metres east to west and about 15 metres north to south. Today, however, no visible trace of this structure remains above ground.

The only hint of its former presence lies in the gentle curve of a modern stone field wall on the southern side of the site, which may well follow the original line of the ancient enclosure. The location itself, positioned on elevated ground with clear views northward to the sea, suggests this was likely a stone cashel; a type of ringfort built with dry stone walls rather than earthen banks. These defensive homesteads were common throughout Ireland during the early medieval period, typically housing a single extended family and their livestock.

The site's coastal position and the quality of the surrounding agricultural land would have made it an attractive spot for settlement. Like many of Ireland's estimated 45,000 ringforts, this one has gradually disappeared from the landscape, its stones probably recycled into field boundaries and nearby buildings over the centuries. What remains is a ghost impression in the modern field system, a subtle reminder of the families who once called this windswept promontory home.
