A cashel is a ringfort built from dry-stone walling rather than earthen banks and ditches, a distinction that reflects both the local geology and the practical habits of early medieval farmers and landowners who shaped much of the Irish countryside between roughly the fifth and twelfth centuries. These enclosures typically served as defended farmsteads, protecting a family, their livestock, and their grain from the everyday hazards of a world without centralised law enforcement. Clare is particularly rich in them, its limestone terrain lending itself to the kind of fieldstone construction that has proved remarkably durable.

Ringforts of this type are among the most numerous archaeological monument categories in Ireland, with estimates running to tens of thousands of surviving examples across the country, yet individual sites like this one at Poulbaun rarely attract the attention given to more dramatic or better-documented monuments. The cashel form, with its mortarless stone circuit, can look deceptively simple, but the labour involved in gathering, splitting, and stacking the necessary material was considerable, and the structures that remain speak to settled, organised communities with both the resources and the intention to build something lasting.
