Ringfort (Cashel), Rannagh, Co. Clare

On a rise in the pastureland of Rannagh in County Clare, a roughly rectangular stone enclosure sits quietly within a much older and more intricate landscape.

Most Irish ringforts are circular earthworks, so a cashel of this shape draws the eye differently. A cashel is a ringfort built from stone rather than banked earth and ditch, and this one measures approximately 35 metres north to south and 31 metres east to west, making it a substantial structure, even in its current collapsed state.

The walls, now spread to between 1.2 and 3.8 metres in width, have lost much of their height, but stone facing is still visible in several places, standing up to 0.6 metres on the north side and 0.5 metres on the south. The interior is uneven underfoot, and near the centre lies a souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage or chamber of the kind commonly associated with early medieval settlement in Ireland, likely used for storage or as a place of refuge. What complicates the picture further is the evidence of later use: animal pens were added both inside and outside the cashel walls, tucked into the south-west corner, along the north, and extending beyond the enclosure to the south-west and north-west. The site sits within a multiperiod field system, meaning the land around it carries the traces of many successive phases of farming and enclosure, each generation leaving its marks on the ground. The cashel commands clear views from the east-south-east to the south, which suggests its position on the high ground was no accident.
