A cashel is a ringfort built from stone rather than earthen banks, a type of enclosed farmstead that was common across Ireland during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. Thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation, and Clare, with its limestone-rich terrain, has more than its share. What makes any individual example worth pausing over is often the specifics: the height of the walls, the diameter of the enclosure, whether a souterrain runs beneath it, whether any trace of internal structures remains.

Ringforts of this kind were not defensive installations in the military sense, despite the impression their enclosing walls might give. They were the farmsteads and homesteads of early medieval families, the stone boundary marking out a domestic and agricultural space, protecting livestock from wolves and neighbours alike. In Clare, the carboniferous limestone that shapes the Burren and its surroundings made stone construction a natural choice where good building material lay close to the surface. The cashel at Rosslevan belongs to this broader pattern of settlement, a community once organised around enclosed family units scattered across the countryside, each one a small world of its own.
