Ringfort (Cashel), Tullira, Co. Galway

A double ring of boulders half-swallowed by vegetation, sitting quietly in a flat Galway pasture, is not the most dramatic sight in the Irish countryside.

What makes this site at Tullira quietly interesting is the gap between how it was once understood and what closer inspection suggests it actually is.

When McCaffrey catalogued the site in 1952, he classified it as a circular earthen fort, describing a denuded bank roughly 3.6 metres wide and less than a metre high. That kind of enclosure is common enough across Ireland, the earthwork remnant of a ringfort, a defended farmstead of the early medieval period. On later inspection, however, the site told a different story. Rather than a collapsed earthen bank, what was visible was an overgrown double ring of boulders set on edge, most likely the foundations of a cashel wall. A cashel is a ringfort built from dry-stone rather than earthen construction, and this one, measuring approximately 24.4 metres in diameter, falls within the typical range for such enclosures. The distinction matters because stone-walled and earthen ringforts, though often grouped together, may reflect different social standings, local building traditions, or simply the materials that were readily available in a given landscape. To the south of the main enclosure, a possible souterrain was also noted. A souterrain is an underground stone-lined passage or chamber, often associated with ringforts and thought to have served for storage, refuge, or both.

What survives at Tullira is modest by any measure, but that modesty is itself instructive. The site has been worn down by centuries of agricultural use, and what once would have been a substantial dry-stone enclosure is now legible mainly as a low, overgrown outline. It is the kind of place that rewards a second look, and a willingness to read a landscape in which the boundaries between field, ruin, and geology have long since blurred.
