Ringforts
Above the 600-foot contour in County Clare, a stone-walled enclosure sits in rough upland pasture with open views stretching westward.
What makes this cashel, a type of ringfort built from dry-stone walling rather than earthen banks, quietly arresting is not just its own fabric but the sheer density of activity surrounding it. Radiating walls, nearby hut sites, a neighbouring enclosure, and the remnants of a multiperiod field system spread across this elevated ground, suggesting that what looks like an isolated monument was once the nucleus of a much busier landscape.
