Ringforts
In the level grassland of Cloghaun, in County Galway, a circular earthwork sits quietly losing its definition to decades of vegetation.
It is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, which was typically a circular enclosure defined by earthen banks and ditches, used as a farmstead or defended homestead during the early medieval period. This one measures nearly fifty metres in diameter, which places it on the larger end of the scale for such monuments, yet there is little about its present condition to suggest former significance. The bank that once clearly delimited the enclosure is now poorly preserved, and dense overgrowth has further obscured whatever original form it held.
