Ringfort, Cloghlea, Co. Clare

In the townland of Cloghlea, in County Clare, there is a ringfort.

That much is certain. Beyond the name and the map reference, the details remain officially unrecorded in any publicly accessible form, which places this site in a curious category: a known monument whose particulars exist only in physical form on the landscape and in archival files not yet made available online.

Ringforts are among the most common archaeological monuments in Ireland, with estimates suggesting somewhere between 40,000 and 50,000 once existed across the island. They are roughly circular enclosures, defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, and they served primarily as farmsteads during the early medieval period, roughly from the fifth to the twelfth century. Despite their ubiquity, each one carries its own local history, shaped by the families who built and occupied it, the land around it, and the centuries of use or neglect that followed. The ringfort at Cloghlea is no exception to that individuality, even if the documentary record has not yet caught up with it.

Clare is particularly dense with such monuments, and the Cloghlea area offers the kind of low-lying agricultural landscape in which these enclosures were commonly sited, positioned to command a modest view over surrounding farmland while remaining close to workable soil. Without further detail drawn from survey or excavation, the site invites patient observation more than guided interpretation, a case where the monument itself must speak first.
